He Jun: Singapore Yearns to Gain "Double Profits" from the TPP
ANBOUND
The US' Asia "rebalancing" strategy affects the interests of all parties, especially the TPP (Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement), once being signed, would produce significant results. When Singapore’s premier Li Xianlong visited the US, he twice mentioned the strategic value of TPP to the US. ANBOUND’s senior researcher He Jun considers that there are two functions for Singapore that the TPP will exert: first, it will provide a trade framework which will benefit Singapore economically; second, it will offer a security framework which will enable Singapore to obtain safety interests with a US-dominated TPP excluding China. This conforms with the Li Guangyao’s long-time desire: to make full use of China for Singapore’s economy and the US for Singapore’s safety. Regarding this strategy, China should get some bargain chips at proper time.
