In 40 years of reform and opening-up, promoting international law has been one of China's top goals.

President Xi Jinping has proposed the diplomatic concepts of building a new type of international relations and building a community with a shared future for mankind. The nation has also pledged to continue to firmly maintain and promote international law to safeguard fairness and justice.

Senior officials and judges highlighted the country's position at a meeting on international law on Friday.

Yang Jiechi, a member of CPC Central Committee Political Bureau, said: "China has widely participated in international treaties and mechanisms to progress together with the world. China has implemented and developed international laws to solve problems left over from history and international disputes, and to firmly safeguard its national sovereignty, safety and development interests."

Many agreed that China has become a builder of world peace, a contributor to global development and a defender of international order. And lots of distinguished legal advisors have made their contributions to this cause.

"Famous Ministry of Commerce representative Zhang Yuejiao was elected president of the appeal section of the WTO dispute settlement mechanism. That's unprecedented," said Shi Jiuyong, a former judge and president of the International Court of Justice.

"Since 1978's reform and opening-up, we have made huge strides in our international law."

Xu Hong, director-general of the Department of Treaty and Law of Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said, "We will further participate in global governance to contribute more Chinese influence, especially in the process of the Belt and Road Initiative.

"We will follow the principles of extensive consultation, joint contributions and shared benefits to provide more legal public products to the international community."
