China's Development Strategy for Central-western Region Needs Adjustment
ANBOUND

The Chinese government has been promoting two major development strategies in the western region and central of China. In the recent years, the two strategies become an important driving force that stimulates the development of the Central and western region in China, its economy's growth speed surpassing the one at the eastern region. However, under the guideline of prioritizing GDP as well as rapid industrialization and urbanization, the central-western region’s development has been following the footstep of the eastern region by undertaking huge amount of highly polluted and energy-consuming industries from the east. Even some of the new projects also include energy-consuming industries. If this trend continues, the ecological environment in the central and western region will be severely damaged and difficult to recover. Therefore, the development policies in the central and western region ought to be adjusted in line with the country’s economic transformation.
