The Central Bank of Pakistan announced that the renminbi can be used as a settlement currency, and this is a major event. Although there are quite a number of projects under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), it is not really much use. Investment and projects can be done even without BRI; the key of BRI is not "project diplomacy" but financial. The substantive breakthrough happens with this recent event; without the internationalization of the renminbi, China will not have its actual international status. This is the material basis for the relations between big powers in today's world.
