The prospects for peace negotiations in Ukraine are encouraging. Many believe that Ukraine can only be considered victorious if it completely defeats Russia, reclaims all its territories, and forces Putin to lose power, leading to a change in the Russian government. This idea, when compared to reality, is obviously unfeasible. Vladimir Putin's rule in Russia has not lasted just a few years; he has a complete national governance system in place and overthrowing such a system will not depend on the fluctuations of the battlefield. Therefore, although the impact of unforeseen events cannot be ruled out, it is highly unlikely that Russia, as a major world power, will undergo a complete change due to the Ukraine war.
Crucially, the war in Ukraine has resulted in even greater losses for Ukraine, with its land turned to scorched earth and a significant sacrifice of young, vital forces. Ukraine needs a chance to catch its breath. It needs reconstruction. The country's economy and society require a comprehensive opportunity for restructuring. It needs more funds, a wealthier population, and a stronger national industry. It also requires a powerful, always-prepared military, not one that is rushed into battle as was the case at the onset of the war. Achieving all of this will take time, hence stopping the war now is the right decision, as it could give Ukraine the time it needs.
As things stand, peace negotiations for Ukraine are a difficult process, and no one can force Ukraine to accept a ready-made solution. The key is that Ukraine must be involved in the process to get what it wants. Therefore, the attitude of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is crucial in this regard. He has indeed made many exaggerated statements in the past, but now it is more important to take practical actions. This is also a moment that tests President Zelenskyy's abilities as a political leader. This is a critical moment for him to play his role as a political leader. In the past, he was a soldier; now, it is about politics. What Ukraine needs most right now are politicians and diplomats.
Unfortunately, we are now seeing signs of Zelenskyy's influence waning, which does not bode well for Ukraine's prospects for peace. In reality, the world must recognize that peace in Ukraine is unattainable without Zelenskyy. It is only through realism from both Ukraine and the international community can the future of both Ukraine itself and Europe be secured.
