The Strategic Significance of NATO's F-16s Flying into Ukraine for the First Time
Kung Chan

According to reports, an F-16 fighter jet took off from Romania, piloted by a Ukrainian pilot, flew into Ukrainian airspace for the first time, landed at an airport in the Carpathian Mountains, and then flew back to Romania's training base. This flight has greatly excited Ukraine, as they see it as symbolically significant. After a long struggle, they finally have Western fighter jets, signifying Ukraine's possession of Western military aircraft. Additionally, what is worth noting is that this flight also confirms that Ukrainian pilots (though only one) are capable of mastering Western fighter jets in a short period.

This is what Ukraine wants to convey.

Of course, there are also things that Ukraine did not mention but are worth noting: the delivery of Western modern weapons and equipment implies a deeper direct involvement of Western military forces in the Ukrainian battlefield. Because Ukraine certainly has no one capable of maintaining all such modern equipment, only Western military forces can provide direct battlefield support, from technical aspects to parts, to usage and maintenance, all of which require Western military technicians to work directly on the Ukrainian battlefield. This is equally true from the Storm Shadows missiles to the unmanned sea drones, and now the F-16 fighter jets.

All in all, what brought satisfaction to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was not that the F-16 fighter jets hit a few Russian targets, but that he managed to get NATO and the West to get deeper involvement in the Ukrainian situation. This is the true reason why he continuously demands the West and NATO to provide technically sophisticated but small quantities of armed equipment.

Once the West and NATO become extensively involved in the conflict in Ukraine, theoretically, it may serve as a deterrent for further Russian aggression and ensure the security of Ukraine's heartland. This is because Russian President Vladimir Putin would have to consider the possibility of dragging NATO further into the conflict and the consequences of war. However, if Putin persists in attacking and manages to defeat both the Ukrainian and NATO forces and equipment on the Ukrainian battlefield, it will pose a difficult decision for the West and NATO on how to proceed. The outcome is uncertain, making it inevitably a challenging political decision.

Zelenskyy is indeed a strategic thinker who has achieved success in many aspects, including the matter concerning the F-16 fighter jets.
