Jinsha hydropower dam construction a worrying sign
ANBOUND
Baihetan Hydroelectric Dam, the world's largest hydropower dam has entered the main project construction stage on the 3rd of August, with total installed capacity of 16 million kilowatts, second only to the Three Gorges Project. It is the world's second largest hydropower station, and the second level dam among the 4 dams (Wudongde, Baihetan, Xiluodu and Xiajia) of the Jinsha River. Together with the Three Gorges Project and Gezhou Dam project, it will be the world's largest "clean energy corridor." However, building high-density hydropower stations at the ecological fragile Jinsha region will cause irreversible damage to the natural environment and the biodiversity. There is excessive power in China; in 2016 there is more than 30 billion kwh abandoned hydroelectricity, making the construction of large hydropower stations a waste.
