Beijing must sort out roles as both capital and city for progress
ANBOUND
Sorting out Beijing's roles as both capital and city is the main problem that the central service, economic, and social development centres are scratching their heads over. According to Anbound’s research team, Beijing can follow London’s model in sorting out its roles as both capital and city by setting up a type of compound capital city. First, it has to establish an inner city, a part of the city that preserves the classic ambience of Beijing to function as the 'pure’ capital city. Outside the capital city area, a bigger metropolitan city area can be built to demonstrate Beijing’s role as a big city that performs many functions. This type of layout will suit Beijing better, because on one hand, it fulfils the requirements of a capital city by satisfying the central government’s directive for development, and on the other, it solidifies Beijing’s role in social and economic development.
