China should avoid over-development of hydroelectricity in Southwest
ANBOUND

In recent years, under the dual pressures of the rapid growth of hydropower facilities and the continued slowdown in the growth electricity usage, for several years Sichuan, Yunnan and other provinces have "abandoned" hydroelectricity. However, hydropower stations are expanding. Authoritative research shows that dozens of large reservoirs are built, or will be built at the upper reaches of the Yangtze River. Coupled with the impact of diversion of the water sources from the South to the North, there could be reduction of water resources of the Yangtze River in the future. Anbound research team had previously pointed out that hydropower is not a clean energy source, but a high cost, ecological damaging one. Now that the abandonment of hydroelectricity is becoming serious, we propose that there should be mechanism for the construction of hydropower projects, and reconsider those projects to be executed, and implementing banning measures.
