ANBOUND's Observation: U.S. Proposes "Pekingology" in Strategic Research
Chan Kung

The United States has come out with the concept of "Pekingology" in the field of strategic research. Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), one of the most important and renowned American think tanks, is working hard to promote this concept and research progress.

CSIS believes that China has become one of the most consequential countries in the 21st century, Therefore, it is more pressing than ever for the U.S. to understand how the country is governed. True to its name, Pekingology is the study of political behavior in the People's Republic of China, aimed at unraveling the behavior of the Chinese Communist Party and the impact of those behaviors on China and U.S.-China relations.

CSIS's research in Pekingology mainly adopts the common step-by-step approach, and is mainly published in its blogs. It encompasses various aspects, and gradually moving towards the core subject. In this regard, the main research activity is led by Jude Blanchette who holds Freeman Chair in China Studies at CSIS. Together with a number of experts, he regularly analyzes the activities of the Chinese governance system and how these activities affect and complex relations of the U.S. with China.

The very concept of "Pekingology" represents a kind of progress in the U.S. In the past, American scholars often refused to admit their failure, as they thought they had thoroughly studied and mastered everything about China. In contrast, the emergence of Pekingology means that the U.S. has started the process of re-understanding and recognizing China's policy.

Perhaps correspondingly, ANBOUND should propose its own concept of "Americanology".
