Chinese Government Initiated Dialogue to Release Two Canadians Held under Custody
Chan Kung
Canadian Ambassador to the United States
Kirsten Hillman stated on September 26 that the Chinese government initiated
the dialogue to release two Canadians, Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor, taken
into custody almost three years ago by China. Analysts believe that this is not
the result of Canadian diplomatic efforts, but that China is satisfied with the
success of its hostage diplomacy strategy.
It is more likely that China is taking
advantage of the mentality of the United States and Canada. Canada is eager to
take the two hostages back home, while the United States may wish to understand
the situation. China has won the game, especially before the 20th National
Congress of the Communist Party of China, and this carries multiple
significances.
