Water conservancy projects and environmental problems
ANBOUND
At the end of November 2016, the Jiangxi Provincial Government announced that the Poyang Lake sluice project has entered the pre-construction environmental assessment stage, but this project has been jointly opposed by more than 100 public institutions and groups, including the World Wide Fund for Nature. On the surface this is the contradiction between the local economic interests and the protection of the ecological environment, but Anbound think tank's scholars noted that the Poyang Lake Water Control Project is in fact involving in regional water competition and regional politics. Furthermore, the Poyang Lake hydrological ecological environment is in serious deterioration, caused by the Three Gorges Project. This has caused the project to become a typical negative case where the environment is affected by large-scale water conservancy projects. Using water conservancy project to offset another water conservancy project is not a desirable idea, as this will undoubtedly cause more ecological, environmental problems in the future.
