Duterte's realist policy shapes China-Philippines relations
ANBOUND

The state visit of Rodrigo Duterte, President of the Philippines to China will become an important event in China-Philippine relations. Concerning the prospects for bilateral relations, Duterte has expressed willingness to work together with China to solve the South China Sea dispute for the sake of economy. Based on what Duterte has expressed, we believe that he is an extreme realist-pragmatic leader; his attitude and needs are much needed in the Philippines today. This kind of realism will also shape the future of China-Philippine relations. It should be reminded that on the issue of South China Sea, China has the urgent need of a United States' ally to change its stand, and it is expected that China will be more or less emphasizing on the realism of the Philippines.
