How will Clinton see the South China Sea issue if she wins?
ANBOUND
Pivot to Asia is a key initiative of the Obama administration's foreign policy. If Hillary Clinton wins the election, how will she deal with China? Anbound believes that South China Sea issue will remain to be a difficult issue for US-China relations. As long as there are no major problems within China's economic and social aspects, Clinton and her team will have difficulty in achieving expected development in the South China Sea issue. First of all, China has been expanding land reclamations in the countries surrounding South China Sea and therefore obtains substantial benefits. Secondly, China has found the mode to respond to the US military pressure in the South China Sea. Thirdly, for their actual interest, the countries surrounding South China Sea will not directly oppose China; China will also adopt flexible policy to maintain cooperation with these countries. Lastly, China has already drawn the bottom line for Japanese military intervention in the South China Sea, and should be able to prevent Japanese military's substantial involvement in the South China Sea issue.
