WeChat to examine teen mode after civil lawsuit filed
Global Times
Tencent's massively popular app WeChat said it will improve products for minors, including their time use limits and strengthening pop-up functions for them, after Chinese prosecutors sued Tencent on Friday, arguing that the "youth mode" launched by WeChat does not comply with Chinese laws.

According to a statement issued by WeChat on Saturday, the company submitted a report to the regulators after the lawsuit was filed, in which the company acknowledged that "youth mode" needs to be improved to help minors better manage their time using the app, particularly playing video games.

WeChat said it would launch more measures to improve its product experience for minors, including enriching content, strengthening the pop-up functions and improving time management tools.

Chinese prosecutors filed a civil public interest lawsuit against Tencent on Friday, saying the "youth mode" of WeChat does not comply with China's regulations and laws for minors, according to a notice published by the People's Procuratorate of Beijing's Haidian District.

WeChat responded on Friday night, saying it would carefully examine the functions of the "youth mode" by taking users' suggestions.

"We will take this opportunity to collect our users' feedback, constantly improve the protection measures for minors, and continue to guide them in a positive way," said WeChat.

The company added that it attaches great importance to the healthy growth of young people, and it will actively undertake the social responsibility of protecting and guiding young people.

WeChat launched its "young mode" in October 2020, and has been continuously improving it ever since, it said.

The company said that parents can currently set the extent of access to videos, mini programs and other products on WeChat, and can limit teenagers' activity in terms of live broadcasts and giving rewards.

The procuratorate also said that authorities and social organizations that intend to bring civil public interest litigation must report the relevant information to the court in writing within 30 days after the notice is issued.
