Main research directions: Economic Geography and Regional Development
Academician LU Dadao is an outstanding economical geographer worked in the Institute of Geographical Sciences and Natural Resources Research (IGSNRR), Chinese Academy of Sciences. Lu proposed a “T-shaped” spatial strategy for regional development according to his theory of “pole-axis” system in regional economy. He also established the theoretical framework for China’s industrial geography. His theory which considers the Yangtze River corridor and coastal region as the axles of national economic development, has had great influence on national and regional economic development.
On the one hand, he has completed a large number of national and regional research tasks in the fields of productivity layout, industrial geography, land development and regional development; on the other hand, he has made important contributions to the construction of discipline theory of China's economic geography and regional development research in the areas of location theory and spatial structure theory.
《Theory of the Location and its Significance and Method of Regional Study》、《Theory and Practice of Industrial Allocation of China》、《Regional Development and its Spatial Structure》、《Theory and Practice of Regional Development in China》、《Report of Regional Development in China》(1997、1999、2000、2002), and “Scientific Basis for the Overall Plan of Industrial Productive Allocation of China up to 2000”, “An Analysis of Spatial Structure and Optimal Regional Development”, “Formation and Dynamics of the “Pole – Axis” Spatial System”, “New Factors and New Patterns of Regional Development in China”, “The Significance, Progress and Future Tasks of an Integrated Study of Geo-dynamics behind Regional Development” and so on.

Lu believes that the tech achievements and talents are evaluated by the application units and the society with SCI seriously distorts the values of scientific and technological talents and worsens the scientific research environment in China. We need to strengthen the spirit education of dedicated and loyal scientists. Loyalty and dedication are the essence of the spirit of scientists. It is necessary to stress the pursuit of truth, loyalty to the country, and arousing the patriotic feelings of scholars; to stress that scientists should realize their ideals wholeheartedly; to stress the spirit of dedication, not afraid of hardship, and concentrate on scientific research, so as to become reliable scholars of the country.
