In the
past week, Chung Yong-jin, head of the South Korean retail giant Shinsegae
Group, launched an anti-communist campaign on social media, and many well-known
personalities including presidential candidate Yoon Seok-youl joined in
support. Over the past week, Chung, has posted on Instagram with the hashtag #myulgong
(“destroy the Communists”). Instagram initially deleted these posts, but Chung continued
to post, including "I hate communism", "let's shout out myulgong
together" and other anti-Communist slogans, grabbing news headlines and
getting supportive messages from many users.
Soon,
Instagram reinstated Chung’s deleted posts, explaining that they were
automatically deleted because they contained “offensive” words. Now the hashtag
"#myulgong" is rapidly gaining popularity in South Korea, and conservative
politicians like Yoon have expressed their support for Chung's online
anti-communist movement.
This shows
that South Koreans are running out of patience with their current president Moon
Jae-in, and a new wave of conservatism is about to emerge. This in general, is
a sign of a political turn in South Korea.
